Electric Log Sets

What Is an Electric Fireplace Log Set?

An electric log set is a plug-in electric fireplace unit that uses decorative logs, LED lighting, and electric heat to create the look and warmth of a wood fire without actually burning anything.

Electric log sets are commonly placed inside existing wood-burning fireplaces, masonry fireboxes, mantels, and other approved openings. Many plug into a standard outlet and do not require a chimney, gas line, or venting.

They are a good choice if you want a traditional fireplace look with simple operation and less upkeep.

How Do Electric Fireplaces Work?

Electric log sets use electricity instead of wood or gas.

Inside the unit, LED lighting and flame-effect technology create the appearance of flames moving around or behind the logs. Many models also include an electric heater and fan that send warm air into the room.

The flame effect and heater can often work separately.

That means you can:

• Enjoy flames with heat on a cold evening
• Use only the flame effect during warmer weather
• Adjust flame brightness on select models
• Control heat and other settings with a remote on compatible units

Electric log sets do not create a real flame. This removes the need for combustion, firewood, and gas.

Why Choose an Electric Fireplace Log Set?

Simple Fireplace Conversion

One of the biggest advantages of an electric log set is simplicity.

If you have an unused fireplace, you may be able to place the log set inside the opening and connect it to an appropriate electrical outlet without adding a gas line or rebuilding the fireplace.

Always review the product dimensions and electrical requirements before ordering.

No Gas Line Required

Electric log sets run on electricity, so they do not need natural gas or propane.

This can make them a practical choice for:

• Homes without gas service
• Apartments and condos where permitted
• Older fireplaces no longer used for wood
• Bedrooms or living areas with an existing fireplace opening
• Decorative mantels
• Homes where adding gas piping would be difficult

Enjoy the Fireplace All Year

You do not have to wait for winter to enjoy your fireplace. Many electric log sets let you turn on the flames without the heater.

That gives you the look of a glowing fire on cool fall evenings, rainy spring days, or even during summer when you want the atmosphere without extra heat.

Electric Log Set vs. Electric Insert vs. Gas Log Set

These products may look similar online, but they are not the same.

Feature	Electric Log Set	Electric Fireplace Insert	Gas Log Set
Fuel source	Electricity	Electricity	Natural gas or propane
Real flame	No	No	Yes
Chimney required	No	No	Depends on venting type
Gas line required	No	No	Yes
Typical installation	Sits inside an existing opening	Fits more fully into fireplace opening	Burner and logs installed in approved fireplace
Existing firebox still visible	Often yes	Usually less visible	Yes
Flame without heat	Often available	Often available	No
Heat	Supplemental	Supplemental	Varies by type and BTU output
Best for	Easy fireplace update with traditional logs	More complete electric fireplace conversion	Real flames without burning wood

An electric log set is often the simplest choice if you like the look of your existing fireplace and want to add realistic logs, flames, and supplemental heat.

An electric insert creates a more complete built-in appearance and can cover more of the existing firebox.

A gas log set uses real flames and requires the correct gas connection and fireplace setup.

Serenity Direct offers all three categories, making it easier to choose based on your fireplace and goals.

Can You Put Electric Logs in an Existing Fireplace?

In many cases, yes. Electric log sets are specifically designed to work well in unused traditional fireplace openings.

They may be placed in:

• Masonry fireplaces
• Former wood-burning fireplaces
• Approved decorative fireplace openings
• Custom mantels
• Entertainment centers designed for fireplace products

The opening still needs enough room for the unit and any required clearances.

Before buying, measure:

Width: Measure the available space across the opening.

Height: Measure from the hearth or base to the top of the opening.

Depth: Measure how far the unit can sit inside the fireplace.

Do not rely only on the size listed in the product name. Compare your actual fireplace measurements with the full product dimensions.

What Makes Electric Logs Look Realistic?

Realistic electric log sets use detailed molded logs, ember lighting, layered flame effects, and natural movement to create the look of a real fire. Dimplex Revillusion® models add extra depth so the flames appear more natural inside the fireplace.

Revillusion® Flame Technology

Revillusion® creates a more realistic flame effect by making the flames appear to rise naturally within and behind the logs instead of reflecting off the back of the fireplace.

Mirage™ Flame Panel

A partially frosted acrylic panel helps create the flame illusion without the obvious mirror reflections found in some electric fireplaces.

ThruView™ Design

The open-depth design lets you see through the flames to the back of your existing masonry fireplace.

This can be especially appealing if you want to keep the brick, stone, or other character already inside the fireplace visible.

Does an Electric Fireplace Give Off Heat?

Many do. Electric log sets with built-in heaters are designed mainly to provide supplemental heat, not replace your home's main heating system.

A fan-forced electric heater warms the nearby area while the fireplace creates the visual effect of a fire.

This can make an electric log set useful when you want a little extra warmth in a living room, den, bedroom, or similar space without increasing the thermostat for the entire home.

Can You Use Electric Logs Without Heat?

Yes, on many models. Flame-only operation is one of the biggest advantages of an electric fireplace. You can enjoy glowing logs and moving flame effects without turning on the heater.

This gives you more flexibility than a traditional fireplace because the visual effect is not tied to heat production.

For many homeowners, that means the fireplace becomes a year-round part of the room instead of something used only during winter.

Do Electric Fireplaces Need a Chimney or Vent?

No. Standard electric log sets do not burn fuel, so they do not need a chimney, flue, gas line, propane, or firewood.

You will still need to follow the manufacturer’s electrical, clearance, and installation requirements. Serenity Direct also notes that electric fireplace units typically do not require venting or a gas line.

Do Electric Log Sets Plug Into a Regular Outlet?

Many plug-in fireplace log sets connect to a standard household outlet. However, you should always check the electrical requirements for the exact model you are considering.

Avoid using an extension cord unless the manufacturer specifically allows it.

Frequently Asked Questions About Electric Log Sets

Can I put electric logs in my old wood-burning fireplace?

Many electric log sets are designed for existing fireplace openings. Measure the width, height, and depth of your fireplace and compare them with the manufacturer's dimensions before ordering.

Do electric fireplaces have real flames?

No. Electric logs use lighting and visual effects to create the appearance of flames without actual combustion.

Can You Use Electric Log Sets in Apartments or Condos?

Yes, in some cases. Electric log sets can be a good option because they do not require gas or wood. Before installing one, check your lease, HOA rules, building requirements, available outlet, and the manufacturer’s installation instructions.

What Should I Look for in the Log Design?

Compare the log color, wood texture, ember effects, and overall arrangement. Choose a style that looks natural both when the fireplace is on and when it is off.

How Do Electric Flame Effects Differ?

Flame technology can vary by model. Compare the movement, brightness, depth, and placement of the flames to find the look you prefer.

What Controls Are Available on Electric Log Sets?

Depending on the model, controls may include remote operation, flame brightness, flame color, heat settings, thermostat functions, and flame-only mode.

What Electrical Setup Do Electric Log Sets Need?

Check the product’s electrical requirements before ordering. Make sure you have the correct outlet and electrical setup near the fireplace.

Will an Electric Log Set Cover My Existing Firebox?

Not always. Some open-style electric log sets leave more of the original brick or stone visible, which can help preserve the look of an existing masonry fireplace.

Can I use the flames without the heater?

Many electric log sets allow the flame effect to run independently of the heater, so you can enjoy the wood fireplace look throughout the year. Dimplex Revillusion plug-in models include flame-only operation.

Are electric log sets hard to install?

Plug-in models can require much less installation than gas or wood options. Many can be placed inside a suitable fireplace opening and plugged into the correct outlet, but you should always follow the manufacturer's instructions.
